Mike Davis, a conservative attorney with close ties to President-elect Donald Trump and was under consideration to serve as attorney general, accused former chairman of the joint chiefs Gen. Mark Milley of treason.
“Remember when Bob Woodward and Robert Costa reported General Mark Milley offered to give China an advanced warning if President Trump ordered an attack? I do. Sounds like treason to me,” Davis wrote on X. “Lawyer up, Mark. Nobody is above the law. January 20th is coming.”
Davis is referring to two calls Milley made to Gen. Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army in 2021 to assure them that the U.S. had no intention of attacking China after U.S. military officials flagged concerns that the Chinese believed such a strike was possible, according to NBC News.
Milley explained that the calls were coordinated before and after with Secretary [Mark] Esper and acting Secretary [Chris] Miller.
“My task at that time was to de-escalate,” he said in a testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee. “At no time was I attempting to change or influence the process, usurp authority, or insert myself into the chain of command, but I am expected to give my advice and ensure that the president is fully informed.”
The calls were first revealed in a book by Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.
Trump has also suggested that Milley is a traitor who should be put to death for making calls to the Chinese.
“If the Fake News reporting is correct, [Milley] was actually dealing with China to give them a heads up on the thinking of the President of the United States,” Trump wrote in the post on his Truth Social site last year. “This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been death!”
“A war between China and the United States could have been the result of this treasonous act,” Trump added.
