Proposal to rename part of  ‘John Lewis Way’ after Donald Trump withdrawn.

Lawmakers in Tennessee have withdrawn a bill to rename a portion of Rep. John Lewis Way to President Donald Trump Boulevard.

The bill’s sponsors, Republicans Rep. Paul Sherrell and Sen. Frank Niceley, withdrew the legislation on Monday night, according to the Tennessean.

The road was recently renamed to ‘Rep. John Lewis Way’ to honor Lewis who helped led lunch counter sit-ins along the street during the civil rights movement.

The bill would have renamed the portion of the street between Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Boulevard and James Robertson Parkway to President Donald Trump Boulevard. This would have given Tennessee’s legislative office building a President Donald Trump Boulevard address.

Several officials voiced their opposition to the proposal, including Metro Councilwoman Zulfat Suara who called the bill “ridiculous” and vowed to fight it.

“The bill to rename portion of Rep. John Lewis Way was withdrawn tonight,” Suara wrote on Twitter Monday. “Thanks to all that made it happen. When we organize. We win.”
