Republican celebrates ‘institutional victory’ because Trump “said jump and we didn’t jump”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky) appears to be celebrating the fact that House Republicans defied Donald Trump by removing a provision to raise the debt ceiling from the final spending bill.

After tanking the original bipartisan deal, Trump demanded that any new spending deal has a provision to suspend the debt ceiling before he is sworn into office in January.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) then introduced a second version of the spending bill with Trump’s demand but that failed with 38 Republicans opposing the measure.

The final deal that passed in the House Friday did not have the provision to suspend the debt limit.

Speaking with CNN on Friday, Massie expressed frustration at adding a debt limit increase into the bill. And even though he still voted against the final legislation that passed, Massie praised Republicans for defying Trump.

“In some sense, there’s an institutional victory here, which is the president said jump, and we didn’t jump,” Massie said.
