Schiff advances in California Senate race.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) advanced to the general election in California, where he will face Republican Steve Garvey in the race for US senator, according to projections.

Under California law, the top two vote-getters in the nonpartisan primary field advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.

Schiff and Garvey’s advancement from the primary means Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee will not compete in the general election.

The match-up was what Schiff wanted. He ran ads in the final days leading up to the primary elevating Garvey –a proud supporter of Donald Trump–over Porter to avoid a messy and expensive intraparty fight in the general election in a safe Democratic seat, according to NBC News.

The candidates are vying for the seat vacated by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), which is temporarily filled by Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) who was appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
