Sen. Tommy Tuberville says Democrats support 'reparations' because they are 'pro-crime'

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) went on a racist rant at Donald Trump’s rally in Minden, Nevada on Saturday evening during which he accused democrats of supporting reparations for minorities because they are “pro-crime.”

“Some people say, well, they’re soft on crime. No, they’re not soft on crime. They’re pro-crime, they want crime,” Tuberville said. “They want crime because they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have. They want reparation because they think the people that do the crime are owed that. Bullshit! They are not owed that!”

Tuberville also called for education reform and an end to food stamps, saying “people need to go back to work.”

Reparations typically refers to restitution offered to the descendants of slaves for the centuries of servitude, unpaid forced labor and suffering enslaved people endured.

Tuberville’s comment drew the ire of several critics including CNN anchor Abby Phillip.

“Just straight-up racism from a sitting United States senator!” Phillip said on CNN’s Inside Politics . “But really talking to white voters about their own preconceived notions of Black people being responsible for crime and not deserving anything as a result.”
