CNN host Jake Tapper slammed Republicans over their reaction to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, noting the inconsistencies in their attacks on the president.
During Friday’s edition of The Lead, Tapper singled out Fox News host Sean Hannity’s response to Biden’s address, accusing him of changing his criticism of the president to fit whatever narrative Republicans want to relay to their voters.
After Biden’s address Hannity, who regularly portrays the president as a doddering, senile old man incapable of stringing two sentences together, criticized him for being too energetic.
“Before the speech, Republicans were saying Biden was old, weak gaffe-prone, senile, a pushover,” Tapper said during his show, according to a clip shared by Mediaite before playing a clip of Hannity referring to Biden as ‘Jacked-Up Joe.’
“Can Republicans have it both ways? I mean, this also reminds me of the fact that they accuse him of being a dumb puppet fool and also this criminal mastermind” Tapper continued. “It just seems like you gotta pick a lane here.”
Hannity fired back in a post on Twitter, writing: “Lol. @jaketapper Fake Jake are you really that dumb? Ok. Let’s play, game on. Tune in to radio and TV Monday. I’ll gladly educate you. If you still have a job Monday.”
Republicans have targeted Biden over his age and cognitive abilities in the lead up to the November election. They argue he is in cognitive decline and unfit to serve another four years. Republicans are also leading an impeachment effort in the House, accusing Biden of benefiting from his son Hunter foreign business deals and allegedly accepted bribes to influence the US foreign policy.
Though Republicans are yet to provide any evidence to support their claim after monthslong investigation, right-wing hosts like Hannity regular refers to the president’s family as the ‘Biden crime family’ with Joe Biden as the boss.
