Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) walked off after a British journalist asked him why mass shootings only seem to happen in the United States during a vigil for the 19 children and two teachers that were murdered on Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
“It’s easy to go to politics,” Cruz told Mark Stone, a US foreign correspondent for Sky News when he asked about gun reform.
“The proposals from Democrats and the media? Inevitably, when some violent psychopath murders people. If you want to stop violent crime, the proposals the Democrats have? None of them would have stopped this,” Cruz, who proposed hardening schools with bulletproof windows and only have one door, said.
Cruz is set to deliver a speech at the National Rifle Association convention this Friday in Houston, Texas.
He decided to end the interview when Stone asked: “Why only in America? Why is this American exceptionalism so awful?”
“You know, I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful. You’ve got your political agenda. God love you,” Cruz replied before storming away.
Stone and the Sky News crew followed Cruz and kept asking him about gun violence in America saying he “can’t answer” why these types of mass shootings seem to “only happen in America”.
“Why is it that people come from all over the world to America? ‘Cause it’s the freest, most prosperous, safest country on earth. Stop being a propagandist,” a visibly upset Cruz answered before making his exit through one of the many doors at the venue.
