Ted Cruz tells millions of Americans who lost unemployment benefits amid the pandemic to "get a job."

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) told millions of Americans who lost unemployment benefits over the weekend to get a job.

“Um get a job?. There are millions of vacancies, and small businesses across the Nation are desperate for workers,” Cruz wrote in response to an Associated Press headline saying ‘Jobless Americans have few options as benefits expire.’

Two programs — one that provides jobless aid to self-employed and gig workers, the other to people who’ve been unemployed for more than six months — expired over he weekend, according to the Associated Press. As a result, 8.9 million people lost their weekly benefit payments.

An additional 2.1 million people also lost a $300-a-week federal supplemental unemployment payment. These recipients will, however, continue to receive state unemployment benefits.

There are currently no plans from the White House to extend unemployment benefits. And no states appear inclined to take action either, The Washington Post reported.Â
