Thirty-eight Republicans in the House voted against a Trump-backed bill to prevent a government shutdown and suspend the debt limit.
Earlier this week, lawmakers had reached a bipartisan plan to fund the government through March 14, 2025 and prevent a shutdown days before Christmas. But, Elon Musk and Trump urged Republicans to oppose the bill or risk getting primaried.
House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled the bill in response and worked on a plan B which was Thursday’s bill.
The new bill won praises from Trump who took to his Truth Social app to tell Republicans to support the bill.
“Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have come to a very good Deal for the American People,” he wrote. “The newly agreed to American Relief Act of 2024 will keep the Government open, fund our Great Farmers and others, and provide relief for those severely impacted by the devastating hurricanes.”
The bill failed on a 174-235, vote with 38 Republicans voting against the bill.
