Donald Trump is denying ever discussing arms sales with China’s President Xi Jinping, contradicting comments made by his ambassador.

In an interview on Fox News Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said that Trump “continues to say: hey, we sell arms to other people around the world,” adding that Trump “actually asked President Xi, would he like to buy some, at one point.”

Pressed on Perdue remarks in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump appeared caught off guard by the comments.

“To China? You mean to Taiwan? I’ve never heard of that one. I’m going to have to ask him,” Trump said. “ You mean we’re going to sell? No, they’d probably like to buy it because we do make better equipment than that, so maybe it’s a good idea. But we didn’t discuss that.”

“He may have been talking about Taiwan,” he added. “I think he probably was talking about that.”

A U.S. official has disputed that the US was contemplating selling arms to China

“The U.S. government has no plans to sell weapons to China,” the official said to CNN.

The State Department also denied a potential sale, saying in a statement that “U.S. law prohibits arms sales to China and there is no offer or plan to sell arms to China.
