The Brazilian government has denied visas to two Trump administration officials ahead of the country’s upcoming elections.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Brazilian government said that officials Riley M. Barnes, an assistant secretary, and Samuel Samson, a deputy assistant, wanted to undermine the upcoming October 4 elections in Brazil.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is running for reelection against Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup after losing to da Silva in 2022.

Bolsonaro has raised doubts about Brazil’s electronic voting system, without providing any evidence for his claims, according to the Associated Press. He has long insisted that the machines are prone to fraud, echoing similar claims Trump made following his loss to Joe Biden in the U.S. 2020 presidential election.

The Bolsonaro family has close ties with Trump, and Sen. Bolsonaro is seen as the Trump administration’s preferred candidate in the election. The senator has also been repeating his father’s claims.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that Barnes and Samson planned to go to Brazil July 27-30 for a ‘routine visit’ to meet government officials, religious leaders and others about “election integrity,” religious freedom and freedom of expression.

“Any insinuation of a ‘ploy’ to undermine a democratic nation’s election is a baseless lie,” the State Department added.
