The Donald Trump Justice Department is sending a record number of election watchers to the polls during Tuesday’s crucial midterm elections.

The Justice Department will deploy about 1,000 election monitors to all 50 states for the first time ever to watch the polls.

“Election integrity has been one of the top priorities for this Administration and this Division,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet  Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division at the DOJ said in a statement. “I am very proud we are deploying the largest monitoring effort in DOJ history, and pursuing transparency for elections in an assertive and nondiscriminatory manner.”

But voting-rights groups and election officials said it could suppress turnout and disenfranchise voters, particularly among minority groups.
