A Nevada restaurant owner who hosted Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign is now worried he may have to sell or close his business because of rising costs.

Javier Barajas, owner of Il Toro E La Capra, welcomed Trump in August 2024 to promote his economic agenda and woo service workers with his no-tax-on-tips proposal. Trump’s economic messaging swayed Barajas, who endorsed him at his restaurant.

Barajas also appeared on Fox News to double down on his support for Trump after facing calls to boycott his restaurant.

Two years later, as the economic boom Trump promised failed to materialize, Barajas worries he may have to sell or close his Mexican-Italian fusion restaurant because rising costs and gas prices, driven in part by Trump’s war on Iran, are squeezing his margins.

“We go backward; everything is worse,” Barajas told CNN. “We are hoping every day that the war ends.”

If things keep going like this, we either have to sell this restaurant or close it,” he added.

Despite supporting some of Trump’s policies that have since become law, Barajas said that he doesn’t see things getting better and worries about his employees.

One worker told CNN he was forced to sell his car and now commutes 40 minutes to work on an electric scooter, while another said he took a second job and now works 100 hours a week to barely make ends meet.

When asked whether any of Trump’s policy changes affected his life, the worker responded, “Not really.”
