Term-limited Ohio Republican governor Mike DeWine is condemning an ad released by his party’s nominee to replace him.

The ad from Republican Vivek Ramaswamy’s gubernatorial campaign features Donna Arthur, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Dr. Amy Acton’s mother, accusing the Democrat of being a “liar,” saying, “My daughter needs help,” and questioning whether she would make a good governor.

“Don’t let her become your governor,” Arthur says in the ad. “If you think she’ll make your life better, you’re fooling yourself. It will only get worse.”

Acton’s brother, Philip Stearns, later released a statement and a competing video that provided key context the Ramaswamy campaign ad conveniently left out.

Stearns said that he and Acton have been estranged from their mother for years because she stayed married to their stepfather, Cledith Arthur, who sexually abused Acton at a young age. Acton was removed from her mother’s care at the age of 12.

On Thursday, DeWine joined a growing list of Republicans condemning the ad and demanded that Ramaswamy take it down.

“The ad is deeply, deeply troubling,” DeWine told reporters outside the Ohio Statehouse, according to The Statehouse News Bureau. “But when you know the rest of the story, when you know the back story, when you know that the husband of the mom was indicted by a grand jury after hearing testimony and that he took off along with the mother, and that the two children never saw the mother after that. When you know that it, just to me, makes it more serious. It makes it just more wrong.”

“It’s wrong to run this ad. … I would urge Ramaswamy’s campaign to take this down,” he concluded.

Despite calling out the ad, DeWine stopped short of pulling his endorsement of Ramaswamy, telling reporters, “I endorse the whole ticket.”

Other Ohio Republicans have distanced themselves from the ad. Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, in a tight re-election battle against Democrat Sherrod Brown, said he would not have run the ad, and Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who is running for state auditor, said the same.

However, Vice President JD Vance, who Husted replaced in the Senate, defended the ad and encouraged Republicans to “stop whining.”

“Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern,” Vance said. “What is my concern is who’s going to govern the next generation of American government. Who is going to win the Senate race in the state of Ohio, who is going to win the governor’s race in the state of Ohio.”

Reached for comment, the Ramaswamy campaign doubled down on the ad, seizing on a comment DeWine made that, earlier in the campaign cycle, Acton released an ad attacking Ramaswamy’s mother.

“Governor DeWine is correct that the first and only candidate to attack the mother of her opponent in this race was Amy Acton,” Connie Luck, spokesperson for the Ramaswamy campaign, said in a statement. “She slanderously lied about Vivek’s mother this fall, without shame. We refuse to accept the media’s double standards when Democrats have regularly used family members of President [Donald] Trump, [Robert F. Kennedy] Jr., and other Republicans in ads.”
