While Donald Trump publicly praises former Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, White House sources told reporters that he has offered scathing criticism of his new hire behind the scenes.

Trump said Friday that he told Zacharia to “reconsider” her role as White House press secretary. This comes as her five-day tenure is already marked by a widely panned Tuesday debut and two brutal Fox News interviews.

“Katie’s been treated very badly by the media. Very, very badly, very unfairly, I think. And I just spoke to her about it. I said, ‘Katie, is this for you?’ Because, you know, she’s been treated very rough. And she’s a nice person,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “I’ve watched her for years on television, but I said, ‘Is this for you, Katie? Because honestly, you don’t need this.’”

But in private, Trump has been critical of Zacharia.

A White House official told POLITICO that in an earlier meeting on Friday that Zacharia didn’t attend, Trump told attendees “she had no talent and shouldn’t be on television.”

White House sources also told CNN anchor and chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins that Trump was “embarrassed” by Zacharia’s performance at her debut press conference but ultimately decided that she “needed to go” after her appearance on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show on Thursday.

On Friday, Trump told reporters he intends to keep Zacharia in his administration “in some form, but maybe a more pleasant form.”
