A GOP PAC trying to boost Sen. Susan Collins’ reelection chances in Maine spent campaign ad money targeting voters in the wrong state.

According to reports, Defending Main Street SuperPAC Inc. ran an ad labeling Maine Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson as “taxin’ Troy and claiming he supported policies that raised costs for Mainers.

But the $25,000 ad buy missed its target audience by roughly 2,500 miles.

The ad, intended for audiences in Portland, Maine, instead ran in Portland, Oregon, for four days.

In a statement to MS NOW, the Super PAC confirmed the mistake and blamed a vendor error for the ad’s misplacement.

“During a recent independent expenditure, our media vendor mistakenly placed approximately $25,000 in digital advertising in the Portland, Oregon media market instead of Portland, Maine,” the super PAC said. “The vendor is refunding Defending Main Street the full amount of the misplaced spend. No donor funds will be lost as a result of the vendor’s error.”

Collins is currently locked in a close reelection battle for her Maine U.S. Senate seat against Jackson. Recent polls show the Democrat with a slight lead within the polls’ margins of error.

Democrats are trying to flip the seat as they work to win control of the Senate. Trump lost Maine in 2024, giving Democrats hope of defeating Collins, whom they’ve targeted in previous elections and who has survived.
