Mullin suggests livestreaming execution is part of ‘restoring American values’

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the decision by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to livestream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.

In an interview on “Face the Nation,” host Margaret Brennan pressed Mullin over concerns that livestreaming the execution of Hasan might garner sympathy for him and turn him into a martyr, especially among people who believe in his cause.

“First of all, no one has to watch it,” Mullin said.

“I follow President Trump. He’s a commander in chief of the country, and he does a phenomenal job,” he added. “He leads this country with a very, very, very direct, forward, straight hand, and he’s restoring American values and bringing us and bringing- where America should be back in line.”

Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people and injured 32 others in a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood. Hegseth announced last week that Hasan’s public execution by firing squad will be livestreamed.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Hegseth told far-right podcaster Jack Posobiec in an interview on Wednesday, drawing swift bipartisan backlash.

“What, is he mimicking ISIS executions? I mean, I understand that in this country we have the death penalty, but public execution is medieval,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said in an appearance on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront.”

“That is just absolutely extraordinary, galling,” he continued, “No matter whether you support or oppose the death penalty, public hangings and executions? That’s what America has become? … That’s pretty extraordinary.”

Sen.Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) also argued that the plan to livestream Hasan’s death by firing squad could potentially backfire.

“There is no need to livestream any execution, including this one,” Murkowski said on Twitter. “I would expect this from terrorists and dictators, but not here in America.”

“It would give this individual, who deserves no further notoriety, the martyrdom he seeks,” she continued. “How we carry out justice matters just as much as the justice itself, so I urge the Pentagon to reverse this gruesome decision.”

Mullin pushed back on Sunday, saying he does not believe the public execution of Hasan posed an increased security threat.

“I don’t see an elevated risk at this point at all because of this,” he said. “I think people need to understand, if you attack America, we will come after you, and we will make sure that the punishment fits the crime.”
