Former President Barack Obama forcefully condemned the Trump administration’s investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) over accusations of immigration fraud.

In a post on Twitter, Obama accused Trump of weaponizing the federal government to target Omar, a fierce critic of the administration, following the raid on the lawmaker’s home last week.

“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota,” Obama wrote on Twitter.

Last week federal agents raided Omar’s Washington, D.C., home and seized her phone as part of a criminal investigation into her immigration paperwork after years of accusations from Trump and right-wing figures about alleged immigration fraud.

Investigators are looking into whether Omar or her father provided false information during their naturalization process when she was a child. Omar has denied the allegations, and no charges have been filed.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration aims to build “a case to strip her of her U.S. citizenship and ultimately deport her.”

At the center of their case is the allegation that she was 18 at the time her father was naturalized and therefore not automatically eligible for citizenship. But the Washington Post reported that the first Trump administration reviewed similar allegations in 2019 and found insufficient evidence to pursue a full investigation.

In his post on Sunday, Obama pushed back on the allegations, saying Omar arrived in the U.S. with her father from Somalia when she was 12 and automatically became a citizen when she was 17 after her father was naturalized.

Obama also noted that the Trump administration has a history of targeting the president’s perceived enemies, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI director James Comey. He said those cases have either stalled or been dismissed for lack of legal basis, and that the administration’s case against Omar will likely end the same way.

“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views,” Obama wrote. “Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.”
