More than 1 million Americans were infected with the coronavirus in the first five days of December.
From Tuesday to Saturday, 1,000,882 new coronavirus cases were reported in the US, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. This brings the total number confirmed cases to more than 14.5 million and 281,199 deaths from the virus.
By contrast, it took nearly 100 days after the first COVID-19 case was confirmed on January 20, 2020 to reach the first one million cases, according to CNN.
These figures do not reflect transmissions over the Thanksgiving holiday when millions of Americans ignored CDC warnings and traveled.
