Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel—former U.S. attorney Robert Hur—to investigate Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
This latest development comes hours after Special Counsel to the President Richard Sauber, released a statement saying the president’s attorneys found documents with classified markings in Biden’s garage at his Wilmington, Delaware home from his time serving as vice-president.
Another set of classified documents was found at an office at Biden’s former institute in Washington.
Hur, the former Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in Maryland, will take over the investigation from Justice Department prosecutor in Chicago, John Lausch.
Garland had already appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents. Several top secret documents were found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last year during an FBI raid after Trump and his team lied about the documents and obstructed the investigation for over a year.
Unlike Trump’s team, attorneys for Biden immediately notified the National Archives after they found the documents and are cooperating with the DOJ review
