The District Attorney’s office in Nassau County, New York, announced on Wednesday that they are opening an investigation into GOP Congressman-elect George Santos following reports he lied about his résumé.
“The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-Elect Santos are nothing short of stunning,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly (R) said.
“The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the third district must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress,” she said. “No one is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”
A New York Times investigation found that Santos lied about his employment history, education and other key details in his bio while running for office.
Santos admitted to “embellishing” his resume in an interview with the New York Post this week. He admitted that he did not graduate from any institution of higher learning nor did he work at financial firms Citigroup or Goldman Sachs.
Democrats are calling for Santos to step down but he hasn’t given any indication he will do so. He is expected to be sworn in next Tuesday.
