The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has suspended an agent who was among the crowd of Trump supporters gathered outside the Capitol on Jan. 6 to stop the certification of President Biden’s election victory.
The agent, Mark Ibrahim worked in a DEA office in the Los Angeles suburbs.
He was off duty but carrying his weapon on Jan. 6, according to Gretchen Gaspari, one of his lawyer. He told Reuters in a phone interview that he “never entered the building” with scores of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol leaving five dead.
Gaspari said Ibrahim was outside the Capitol because “it was a historic event.”
DEA officials learned Ibrahim had been outside the Capitol after he sent photographs from his phone to a group chat of fellow agents. The agency took his weapons and credentials while it decides how to proceed, Reuters reports.
Though he was suspended, he hasn’t been charged with a crime.
