A Florida man is facing daily fines from officials for violating the county’s code by hanging banners at his home that read “Let’s Go Brandon” and “Trump Won”, WFLA reports.
Seagrove Beach homeowner, Marvin Peavy hung an almost three story tall ‘Trump Won’ banner outside his apartment in the South Walton community in May. Walton County Code Enforcement officials told him to remove it last month during a code enforcement hearing because it violated the county’s land development code along 30A.
“I’m here on the beach, and I got a lot of traffic, and people needed to see what I believe in,” said Peavy, according to WFLA. “That’s free speech, and I wanted everyone to know that I’m a Republican and I’m supporting Donald Trump.”
He is being fined $50 a day for every day the banner stays up. But, has doubled down, hanging a “Let’s Go Brandon” banner on Saturday.
Many people came to show their support for Peavy on Sunday after afternoon. He told the outlet that people from all over the country have offered to pay the fines, including a Louisiana woman who has offered to pay for the next two years.
Local Republican leaders like Bill Fletcher, the chairman of the Walton County Republican Executive Committee, are also throwing their support behind him.
“People admire people that stand up, and we have got to start standing up. He is the epitome of somebody who will stand up for his First Amendment right” Fletcher said.
Walton County code compliance official Michael Lynch said it is not a political issue and the banners’ content is irrelevant. He said the restrictions are meant to maintain the aesthetic of the beach community, WFLA reported.
Peavy has no plans to remove the banners.
