Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y) claimed in a 2020 interview that he met convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein and entertained the idea that he could still be alive, according to Insider.
Santos made the comments during his first run for Congress in 2020 during an episode of the conservative podcast “The Rory Sauter Show.”
“I met Epstein in a couple of private equity conferences,” Santos said. “I’ve never dealt with him personally, but I’ve met him, I’ve seen him.”
Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in his Manhattan jail cell while he was awaiting trial on charges of trafficking minors for sex.
New York’s chief medical officer ruled that Epstein’s death was a suicide by hanging.
Still, Santos was not entirely convinced that Epstein was even dead, and if he was, he did not kill himself.
“I wouldn’t put it past me that he’s still walking around us and we’re all like, ‘Oh my god, the guy is alive,’ and we can’t tell,” he said. “You know what, it’s 2020, anything can happen.”
“The whole story is just so skewed,” Santos added. “He didn’t hang himself, he was murdered.”
Santos’ past comments are resurfacing as he faces increased scrutiny for lying about his personal, professional and religious background while running for office.
Santos also claimed his mother was in the South Tower on 9/11 but immigration records show she was not even in the country during that time.
Santos is facing calls from members of his own party to resign from Congress, but he said the only way he leaves is if the people of his district vote him out.
