Disgraced former GOP Rep. George Santos (NY) has ended his independent bid for Congress.
Santos announced last month that he was running to represent New York’s first congressional district in Congress months after he became the sixth lawmaker to be expelled from the House ever.
Santos was expelled after a damning House ethics committee report and a 23-count federal indictment charging him with crimes, including aggravated identity theft and wire fraud.
His comeback attempt failed and he announced Tuesday that he was dropping his congressional bid.
“I have decided to withdraw from my independent run for NY01,” Santos wrote in a post on X/Twitter. “I don’t want my run to be portrayed as reprisal against Nick Lalota… Although Nick and I don’t have the same voting record and I remain critical of his abysmal record, I don’t want to split the ticket and be responsible for handing the house to Dems…”
“Staying in this race all but guarantees a victory for the Dems in the race… ,” Sanros added. “I have meet with leaders and with constituents and I have made the decision to hang it up here and stop perusing this race, THIS YEAR!”
The announcement comes after a FEC filing shows that Santos raised $0 for his congressional bid in the first quarter of the year.
However, the serial fabulist claim that was on purpose.
“I will not be raising a single dime until I’m confirmed on the ballot, unlike many in the media speculating I’m only running to ‘grift’ I’m setting the standard that only confirmed ballot access candidates should raise money,” Santos told the Daily Beast.
