Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) defended Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC) on Sunday when pressed about her qualifications to serve as a U.S senator.

Graham was already facing questions about her qualifications to serve since she was appointed caretaker for the seat left vacant by her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who died.

Graham is running for a full term in the Senate with the backing of Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington. But concerns about her qualifications were intensified after an answer she gave during a debate, suggesting she lacked a basic understanding of national security issues.

During a Tuesday night debate against Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) ahead of the Republican runoff election, Graham was asked, “Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States? And if so, why or how?”

“I’m just gonna be honest here,” she responded. “I’m not, on national security– I’m not that informed on national security, so– but I do support the military. My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army. I’m not a polished politician up here. National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I support the military.”

In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, host Kristen Welker flat-out asked Scott if Graham is qualified to serve as a U.S. senator.

“Darline Graham is the real deal,” Scott answered. “Highly qualified, incredibly competent, ready for prime time. She’s ready to tackle the issues of affordability for the American people, and she’s ready to serve the great state of South Carolina in the United States Senate. I ask every Republican in South Carolina: vote Darline Graham on Tuesday.”

“Should a U.S. Senator have a basic understanding of national security issues?” Welker pressed.

“Well, the answer is yes, and she does. The question we’re asking ourselves today is whether or not she is prepared to serve in the United States Senate and represent the people of South Carolina on the issues that are germane to the moment,” Scott said. “What are the issues of the moment, and is she prepared to hit those issues? She hits those issues spot on. She hits the target bullseye.”

Trump also defended Graham’s glaring lack of qualifications, telling reporters ahead of a rally with her in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that loyalty to his agenda was all that mattered.

“She was just being honest,” Trump said. “It hasn’t been her thing, but she’s surrounded by very good people, and she said that she’s totally for the military.”

“She’s going to do what the military wants, and really what the president wants,” he continued. “She understands that national security is my thing.”

Speaking at the rally, Graham attempted to sidestep the concerns about her resume by recalling Trump’s lack of political experience before his 2016 victory, according to Politico.

“The critics say I shouldn’t run for the Senate. They say I’m not a politician. You know what I say? Guilty as charged,” she said, prompting a wave of applause from the crowd. “By the way, President Trump had never served in an elected office before, and I think he’s done a damn good job.”
