A three-time Trump voter in California has soured on the president’s immigration policy after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested his Russian wife.

Brent Jindra, 48, a tech salesman who voted for Donald Trump three times, told The New York Times that his wife, Galina Bobreneva, was detained by ICE at an airport in Burbank, California, on 13 July.

After they deplaned, Jindra said an ICE agent in plain clothes stopped Bobreneva and told her, “Congratulations, you’ve been chosen for secondary screening.”

For the next 15 minutes, he questioned her. Then placed her in handcuffs and led her away to an unmarked car. Bobreneva was transported to a holding facility in downtown Los Angeles, where she spent two weeks before being freed on a $35,000 bond and forced to wear an electronic monitor, according to The Times.

“The allure of the MAGA campaign was around illegal entries of criminals,” Jindra said. “There was never a mandate for this president to turn the barrel of the gun and start going after people who legally entered.”

Bobreneva entered the US legally in 2021. She extended her visa twice and applied for asylum in 2022 amid Russia’s war with Ukraine. She also has a pending green card application, according to the Times, and her lawyer said that she maintained lawful status.

However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement that Bobreneva is “an illegal alien” and was detained because “she overstayed her welcome in violation of our nation’s laws. To be clear, work authorization or a pending application do NOT confer legal status in the United States.”

Now, Jindra, the three-time Trump voter, is “nervous” about his wife landing in detention again or getting deported.

“I never thought that it was so easy to take freedom from anyone,” Bobreneva said.

Jindra added, We are living in fear in my own country.”

Though he promised to target the ‘worst of the worst’ on the campaign trail, the Trump administration has ordered immigration agents to apprehend nonviolent criminals and even legal permanent residents to meet daily quotas.

In response to the backlash, the White House has argued that anyone in the country illegally is a criminal.
