An Iowa man who voted for Donald Trump in the last three presidential elections now says those votes were the biggest mistakes of his life.

Lance Sulentic, a 56-year-old three-time Trump voter from Iowa, told The Washington Post that his past support for Trump was “the worst three mistakes I’ve ever made in my life,” lamenting his failure to keep the promises he made on the 2024 campaign trail.

“We voted for Trump, and he did the opposite of what he said he was going to do,” Sulentic added. “Gas prices were going to be two dollars, food was going to be cheaper, energy prices was going to be in half, we were going to get two rebate checks to the American people, and we weren’t going to have any new wars, and we were going to build a wall and deport 30 million illegal aliens, and he did none of it.”

Sulentic is just one of several reliable Republican base voters across several states who have turned on Trump, leading to concerns among Republicans that they will not show up in the crucial midterm elections where the Republican Party already faces historical headwinds. The party in power always loses seats.

But the high cost of living, an unpopular war in Iran, and Trump’s record-low approval ratings are also fueling concerns about a Republican wipeout in the midterms.

Nathan Nascimento, executive director at AFP Action, told the Post that their data shows that about 1 in 5 reliable Republican base voters in Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, Montana, New Hampshire and Michigan are at risk this November, meaning they are either planning to stay home or are weighing voting for Democrats.

“This is a big chunk,” Nascimento said. “This is a scary number.”
