Former President Barack Obama took a swipe at Donald Trump’s extreme gold makeover of the Oval Office.
The former president appears in a clip promoting his appearance on Larry David’s HBO Max show Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness. The footage shows Obama touring a recreation of the Oval Office from his time in the White House.
“Nice job on the recreation,” the former president tells the crew. “You even have the apples,” he says, acknowledging the fruit bowl. “It’s fantastic.”
“Although I do want to point out there’s no gold sign on the outside that says ‘Oval Office,’” Obama added, drawing laughs from the crew.
“I can’t believe I didn’t think of that,” Obama said.
Since returning to power, Trump has added several gold accents to the White House, including a gold “The Oval Office” sign next to the Oval Office entrance near the Rose Garden.
Inside the Oval Office, there is gold everywhere: new gold vermeil figurines on the mantle and medallions on the fireplace, gold eagles on the side tables, gilded Rococo mirrors on the doors, and, nestled in the pediments above the doorways, diminutive gold cherubs shipped in from Mar-a-Lago, according to CNN.
