George Santos' mother wasn't even in the country on 9/11.

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) says his mother was in her office in the World Trade Center during 9/11 but according Forward, the congressman’s mother was not even in the country at that time.

Immigration records show that Santos’ mother, Fatima Devolder, applied for a visa to enter the U.S. in 2003 from Brazil and stated on the application that she had not been in the United States since 1999.

However, Santos claims on his website that his mother was “in her office in the South Tower on September 11, 2001, when the horrific events of that day unfolded.” Santos said she survived the attack “but she passed away a few years later when she lost her battle to cancer.”

This is the latest claim from the congressman to be refuted since he was elected in November.

Santos admitted to “embellishing” his résumé following a New York Times investigation that revealed much of his educational and professional background do not add up.

Republicans and Democrats have called for Santos’ resignation but he has refused to step down. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), said Santos was legally elected and his fate should be left up to the voters of his district.

Santos was assigned by GOP House leadership to serve on both the House Small Business Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee on Tuesday.
