The House Ethics Committee has established an investigative subcommittee to investigate Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y) who has admitted to lying about his personal and professional life and whose finances has been under scrutiny, according to The Hill.
The committee said in a statement that it will “determine whether Representative George Santos may have: engaged in unlawful activity with respect to his 2022 congressional campaign; failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House; violated federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a firm providing fiduciary services; and/or engaged in sexual misconduct towards an individual seeking employment in his congressional office.”
Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) will chair the subcommittee while Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.) will serve as ranking member.
In a tweet on Thursday Santos’ office said that he is “fully cooperating” with the Ethics Committee’s investigation.
Santos has admitted to lying about his work and personal background. He is also facing scrutiny over his campaign finances. Santos has denied any criminal wrongdoing.
In addition to the Ethics probe, Santos is also facing state and federal investigations to determine if his lies broke any laws and if he violated campaign finance laws.
