Many American families have turned to food banks to stay afloat, some for the first time as the economic fallout due to coronavirus pandemic continues.
One Arizona family struggling to find work amid the coronavirus pandemic was harassed by a man in a pickup truck who yelled at them to “get a fucking job” while they waited in line at a church food drive in Buckeye to help feed their four children.Â
The family told local CBS News affiliate Arizona’s Family, that the man “looked at my son and told him that his parents were pathetic and couldn’t afford to feed him. At that point, all my manners went out the window.”
The exchange was caught on cellphone video where you can hear the man yelling, “Get a fucking job.”
Arizona’s Family spoke with the man who was driving the truck. He’s the owner of High Side Electric in Buckeye.
He said he stands by what he said, adding “those people need to go to work. They should be ashamed of themselves.”
The largest anti-hunger organization in the U.S., Feeding America says it’s seen a 55% increase in the demand for meals from food banks. Between March and October last year the organization said they gave out 4.2 billion meals to families struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. Many of them were using food banks for the first time.
