Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), 74, said he would consider running for president in 2028, depending on who in the GOP seeks the party’s nomination.

When NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ host Kristen Welker asked whether he was thinking about running for president, Kennedy replied, “Yeah.”

“My plans right now are to run for re-election, but as I’ve said before, if I don’t think I can be effective in the Senate anymore, I would consider it,” he said.

He added that while he hasn’t decided on the presidential race, he will keep track of what other GOP members emerge as candidates.

“On my side of the aisle, if a bunch of goobers run, and I think they’re goobers and one of the goobers might win, and I think I could do a better job, I would consider running,” he said. “But right now, I’m running for re-election.”

Vice President JD Vance is widely considered a likely presidential candidate in 2028.

Asked about the possibility of running against Vance, Kennedy dodged the question.

“I’m not going to talk about another potential candidate. I’m just not there yet,” he said, adding, “it’ll be good for both parties to have a full field.”

The 2028 presidential election will be the first time Donald Trump isn’t the Republican nominee in over a decade. Several Republicans are reportedly considering throwing their hat in the ring, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and even Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
