Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani texted a total stranger about his plans to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Michigan.
The embarrassing gaffe was revealed in the 165-page document unsealed Wednesday by US District Judge Tanya Chutkan who is overseeing Trump’s federal election subversion case.
The document details the former president and his allies’ efforts to pressure state officials to act on their debunked claims of widespread fraud in the election.
According to the filing, Giuliani, who was leading Trump’s legal team, texted the wrong number when he was attempting to pressure a GOP leader in Michigan to use the state legislature to overturn valid election results.
“So I need you to pass a joint resolution from the Michigan legislature that states that, * the election is in dispute, * there’s an ongoing investigation by the legislature and, *the Electors sent by Governor Whitmer are not the official Electors of the state of Michigan and do not fall within the safe harbor deadline of Dec 8 under Michigan law,” Giuliani wrote in a text message on Dec. 7.
Prosecutors say the message failed to go through because Giuliani “typed the wrong number into his phone.”
President Joe Biden flipped the state of Michigan in the 2020 election, defeating Trump by 2.8 percentage points.
The Michigan Board of State Canvassers certified Biden’s victory on November 23, 2020 and Congress affirmed it on Jan. 6 2021 after a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the US Capitol.
Giuliani, meanwhile, has been disbarred in New York and Washington DC for pursuing Trump’s false claims about his 2020 election loss.
In Wednesday’s filing, prosecutors alleged that Trump fired his previous attorney after his election loss and hired Giuliani because he “was willing to falsely claim victory and spread knowingly false claims of election fraud.”
