Donald Trump suggested without a shred evidence that President Joe Biden was high on cocaine during his State of the Union address last month and is calling for drug testing before the presidential debates.
Biden delivered a strong State of the Union speech that undermined efforts to paint him as senile and doddering by Trump and his allies.
But, on Thursday Trump told conservatives radio host Hugh Hewitt that Biden “was higher than a kite” during the address and suggested he was on drugs.
“I think what happened is, you know, that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don’t know, I think something’s going on there because I watched this State of the Union and he was all jacked up at the beginning,” Trump said.
Trump also called on Biden to agree to a debate, but said the president should take a drug test beforehand.
“I want to debate. And I think debates, with him, at least, should be drug tested. I want a drug test,” Trump said.
Asked if he is suggesting Biden is using cocaine, Trump said: “I don’t know what he’s using, but that was not—hey, he was higher than a kite.”
In July, cocaine was found in a cubby near the ground floor entrance to the West Wing which is accessible to visitors. The Secret Service launched an investigation into the small bag of cocaine, but was unable to identify a suspect. It is believed that one of the visitors on tour likely left it there.
However, the lack of a suspect has led to several conspiracy theories in right-wing circles including from Trump himself who claimed the White House deleted footage to protect Biden’s son, Hunter, who is a recovering drug addict.
“It means they destroyed the tapes & the Cocaine was for use by Hunter, & probably Crooked Joe, in order to give this total disaster of a President a little life and energy!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
