Dr. Ben Carson, a national advisor for nutrition, health, and housing at the Department of Agriculture, seems to believe that hot dogs and sweet corn are examples of “food fresh from the ground” that kids should be eating.

Carson made the comment at a “Harvest to Hallways” rally at the United States Department of Agriculture with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as part of the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

While discussing a recent school visit alongside Secretary Rollins to promote child nutrition, Carson said: “And what if we introduced them to food fresh from the ground? Making these relationships with the farmers so they learn about the soil. They learn about irrigation. They learn about the effect that it has on their crop.”

Carson then listed some foods children could eat fresh from the ground.

“They get an opportunity to eat a tomato fresh off the vine,” he said. “It’s a different food than you get in the store, quite frankly. Fresh sweet corn and hot dogs. But what a difference it makes when they can taste these things. They won’t have a craving for the unhealthy foods that are so prevalent in our society.”

Social media users mocked Carson over the comment, pointing out that sweet corn and processed meat like hot dogs are not fresh from the ground.
