Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe slammed Donald Trump’s call to “kill” the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), saying the former president is “absolutely wrong.”
“It’s not surprising that Donald Trump is against surveillance capacity and authority for the FBI, because he is someone who’s been investigated by the FBI,” McCabe told CNN. “But nevertheless, he is absolutely wrong on this count.”
Shortly before House Republicans met to discuss the legislation on Wednesday, Trump wrote on his Truth Social app: “KILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME, AND MANY OTHERS. THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN!!!”
The House voted 193 to 228 to defeat the rule to advance the reauthorization of surveillance authority which allows the US to collect communication of non-Americans overseas.
It is due to expire next week.
The legislation would have reauthorize Section 702 of FISA, which has nothing to do with the surveillance of Trump 2016 campaign aide Carter Page.
“There is no truth or accuracy in [Trump’s post] at all,” McCabe said. “That is not Section 702, totally different thing here.”
