President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to serve as his Health and Human Services Secretary, sources confirmed to The Hill on Sunday.
Becerra will be one of the most visible cabinet officials as the country continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic. He will be tasked with managing the pandemic which is worsening by the day as evidenced by new daily records for infections, hospitalizations and deaths. He will also be in charge of vaccine distribution.
Becerra previously served as a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Downtown Los Angeles. He was elected California attorney general in 2016.
The president-elect will formally announce Becerra as the nominee for HHS secretary this week.
