A federal judge on Friday ordered the government to remove Donald Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In December, the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees voted to rename the institution the “Trump Kennedy Center,” after Trump removed several trustees from the board and replaced them with loyalists before appointing himself as chair.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center board violated the law by unilaterally renaming the center without an act of Congress.

“The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so,” Cooper wrote in his order in U.S. District Court in Washington.

“Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it,” the judge added.

The ruling directed the center’s officials to take down all physical signage bearing Trump’s name and to eliminate any references to a “Trump Kennedy Center” from official materials within two weeks, according to Reuters.

Judge Cooper also ordered Kennedy Center officials to halt plans to close the venue for two years for renovations set to begin this summer.

He made clear that workers can still carry out “necessary maintenance and repair work,” and that the institution can still potentially close for renovations in the future if the board follows the proper requirements.

Judge Cooper’s order came as a result of a lawsuit against Trump by Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees.
