Centrist Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) will not rule out running for president in 2024 on a third party ticket, telling supporters at a No Labels town hall that he plans to win if he decides to enter the race, CNN reports.
“I’ve never been in any race I’ve ever spoiled. I’ve been in races to win. And if I get in a race, I’m going to win,” he said.
Manchin, who is up for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2024, told reporters that people were “putting the cart ahead of the horse” when asked directly about running on a No Labels ticket.
“We’re here to make sure the American people have an option,” he said.
No Labels, a bipartisan political group, is reportedly considered fielding a third party candidate in the event of a Joe Biden–Donald Trump rematch in 2024. However, Democrats worry that such a candidate may pull support from Biden and end up re-electing Trump.
