Republican senator says Trump should drop out of the GOP primary: “He will lose to Joe Biden”

GOP senator slams Trump after he calls border deal a 'betrayal': "Don't be ignorant"

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said Donald Trump should drop out of the 2024 GOP primary because he will lose to Joe Biden.

“He will lose to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls,” Cassidy said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I’m a Republican. I think any Republican on that stage in Milwaukee will do a better job than Joe Biden. And so I want one of them to win.”

“If former President Trump ends up getting the nomination, but cannot win a general, that means we’ll have four more years of policies which I think have been deleterious to our country’s future.”

Cassidy’s comment comes as Trump faces mounting legal troubles. The former president has been criminally indicted four times and will face trials set to begin in 2024 while he campaigns for office.

If Trump is convicted, Cassidy says he doesn’t believe the American people would support him.

“If that is proven, then we may have a candidate for president who has been convicted of a crime,” Cassidy said. “I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced, but I don’t think Americans will vote for someone who’s been convicted. So I’m just very sorry about how all of this is playing out,”

Despite Trump’s legal troubles, the former president remains the clear frontrunner in the GOP presidential primary.
