Biden considering whether to stay in the race, NYT.

Biden praises Harris’ decision to select Tim Walz as her running mate.

The New York Times reported that President Joe Biden told a “key ally” he is considering whether to remain in the presidential race as calls for him to drop out grow after a disastrous debate performance last week.

“He knows if he has two more events like that, we’re in a different place’ by the end of the weekend,” the ally told the Times referring to Biden’s performance on the debate stage.

A top Biden advisor also told The Times that the president is “well aware of the political challenge he faces.”

The newspaper noted that this is the first public acknowledgement that Biden is seriously considering whether he can recover from his shaky debate last Thursday.

There are growing calls for Biden to step aside after the debate even among congressional Democrats.

The report comes as Biden is a scheduled to hold a meeting with Democratic governors on Wednesday evening to shore up support for him amid the fallout from the debate. Among the attendees is California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) whose name has been floated as a possible replacement for Biden at the top of the ticket.
