Former Trump ally Chris Christie lay the blame for Republicans poor midterm performance squarely on Donald Trump while speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership meeting on Saturday.
“We keep losing and losing and losing,” Christie said. “And the fact of the matter is the reason we’re losing is because Donald Trump has put himself before everyone else.”
Christie’s comments come after the ‘red wave’ failed to materialized in the midterms earlier this month. Republicans failed to win a majority in the Senate and narrowly captured the majority in the House despite a favorable political environment.
Several members of the Republican party and in conservative media have pointed the finger at Former President Trump whose endorsement propel far-right candidates to victory in GOP primaries, but they all failed in the general election.
Christie, who is considering running for president in 2024, also urged Republicans to move on from Trump
“It is time to stop whispering,” Christie said. “It is time to stop being afraid of any one person. It is time to stand up for the principles and the beliefs that we have founded this party on and this country on.”
Trump announced earlier this week that he is running for president in 2024 despite pushback from some Republicans, former allies and conservative media.
