Michelle Odinet, the Louisiana judge who was caught on video repeatedly using racial slurs has resigned.
Odinet’s attorney Dane Ciolino turned her letter of resignation in to the Louisiana Supreme Court on her behalf on Friday, Dec. 31, according to KLFY. She was previously on unpaid leave.
In her letter Odinet said she takes “full responsibility for the hurtful words” used in the video and apologized.
The judge came under scrutiny earlier this month after a video from her home captured people repeatedly using racial slurs following a burglary attempt.
While watching security video of the Black suspect being apprehended by police, a man can be heard be saying: “mom’s yelling, n****r, n****r.”
A female voice responded saying “we have a n****r, It’s a n****r, like a roach.”
Odinet later acknowledged that it was her voice and blamed her racist rant on sedatives she was taking at the time.
“I was given a sedative at the time of the video. I have zero recollection of the video and the disturbing language used during it,” she said.
Odinet, a Republican, was first elected as judge of the Lafayette City Court, Division “A” on Nov 3., 2020. It was the first year of what would have been a six year term.
