The Trump administration is threatening to demolish the Kennedy Center if the courts block its renovations of the renowned performing arts center.

In court on Monday, Justice Department attorney Brantley T. Mayers told a federal judge that without the renovation work, the center “will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down.”

He added that decisions would then need to be made “on what to build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years.”

Monday’s filing comes after the Kennedy Center’s Trump-handpicked board voted again to close the center down for the renovations, CNN reported. Those votes have faced repeated scrutiny in court, with a federal judge stepping in earlier this year to block the closure plans after he determined they were made unlawfully.

In May, a federal judge ordered that Trump’s name be removed from the building. But the center’s board voted on August 13 to alter the building’s signage to read “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President ​Donald J. Trump,” while naming the center’s grounds the “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.”

Mayors argued that the court should reject Democratic Kennedy Center board member Rep. Joyce Beatty (Ohio) challenge to renaming the center because if Trump is not given recognition for updating the center, it would cause “donors to flee, financial contributions to dry up, and structural rehabilitation to stop.”

“There will simply not be the expertise or funding necessary to rebuild and renovate this decimated structure. The Trump Administration is ready to go but, without it, the Kennedy Center cannot be saved,” Mayers added.
