Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace (R) should not be elected
“If you’ve watched, just her philosophy and the flip-flopping, I don’t believe she wins reelection,” McCarthy told CNN in an interview. “I don’t think she’ll probably have earned the right to get reelected.”
Mace, who was considered to be a moderate lawmaker, was among the eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL.) who joined Democrats to remove McCarthy as speaker last month.
“It just didn’t, it seemed out of nature. But they seem to had changed during their time,” McCarthy said. “They care a lot about press, not about policy. So they seem to just want the press, the personality.”
Elsewhere in the interview, McCarthy said the Republican Party would benefit “tremendously” if Gaetz was not around.
In response to the interview Mace told CNN that McCarthy “lied all the time,” while Gaetz said “thoughts and prayers to the former speaker as he works through his grief.”
