New Hampshire Republican senate candidate, Don Bolduc, said last week that women’s reproductive decisions belong to GOP “gentlemen” lawmakers at the state level.
Bolduc made the comments on Wednesday night during a town hall in Auburn, according to HuffPost.
“[The choice] belongs to the state. It belongs to these gentlemen right here, who are state legislators representing you,” Bolduc said.
Huffpost reports that Bolduc pointed to Republican state Reps. Jason Osborne and Jess Edwards who were in the room at the time.
Abortion is banned in New Hampshire after 24 weeks. There are exceptions for fatal fetal diagnoses and to save the life of the pregnant person.
Bolduc, a retired Army brigadier general, is trying to unseat incumbent Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) this November. Before Bolduc won the GOP primary last month, Hassan was considered to be one of the most vulnerable incumbents this midterm cycle.
Bolduc rode the big lie to the GOP nomination. Two days after winning the primary, he claimed to have “came to the conclusion” that “the election was not stolen” and that Joe Biden is the legitimate president. Despite this, he still trails Hassan in the polls by eight points.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the campaign arm of the Senate GOP, pulled millions in ads out of New Hampshire last week and is diverting it to other races in Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Nevada.
“Every chance he gets, Bolduc reinforces that he believes politicians ― and more specifically Republican men ― should control a woman’s most personal decision about her future,” Hassan’s campaign spokesperson Sydney Petersen said in a statement. “His most recent comment further underscores that if elected, he would dismiss half the population and it’s clear that he would be a yes vote for a nationwide abortion ban.”
