Republican senator: No one "deserves absolute immunity"

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) slammed Donald Trump’s claims of ‘absolute immunity’ on Monday.

“I don’t believe anybody deserves absolute immunity,” Tillis told CNN. “The fact of the matter is the last thing I want to do. That sounds a whole lot like the position we got rid of when we fought the Revolutionary War. Kings have absolute immunity. I don’t believe presidents should.”

In an effort to shutdown his federal election interference case brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, Trump has argued before the Supreme Court that presidents have absolute immunity from prosecution for actions taken while in office, including an hypothetical scenario in which a president assassinates his political rival.

A majority of the justices did not appear to support Trump’s claim of absolute immunity during oral arguments last month.

But the conservative justices indicated they could limit when a former presidents might be prosecuted, suggesting that the case might have to be sent back to lower courts before any trial could begin.
