The White House had to come out and deny that Donald Trump was given an experimental new obesity drug.

STAT News reported on Tuesday that a physician at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) requested Eli Lilly’s unapproved obesity drug, retatrutide, through the compassionate use program to treat an unidentified 79-year-old man for “refractory obesity with obstructive sleep apnea and pulmonary hypertension,” which can be life-threatening.

White House spokesperson Kush Desai initially denied that the patient was Trump in a statement to STAT News and directed the outlet to the results of Trump’s recent physical, which made no mention of obstructive sleep apnea or pulmonary hypertension.

“We shouldn’t have to bat down baseless speculation for you to not print it,” Desai told the STAT News reporter on Twitter. “Any reporter with standards would understand this. Are you going to now go ask this idiotic question to the ~4 million Americans in this age cohort and then speculate about them being the application?”

The White House’s Rapid Response account issued a more forceful denial on Twitter while attacking the reporter, writing, “No, it wasn’t President Trump — and you people are truly sick and deranged (though the Bluesky link in your bio already gave that much away).”

Trump, 80, is the oldest person ever to be sworn in as president, leading to questions about his advanced age. There have been instances of Trump being seen with bruising in recent months, and he regularly falls asleep in the middle of meetings on camera. Despite this, Trump and the White House have insisted that he is in perfect health.
