Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R) explained that he banned ‘woke’ math textbooks in Florida public schools because they were asking how students feel about the answer for simple math equations.
“These math books, they were doing woke math,” DeSantis said at conservative group Moms for Liberty gathering on Friday. “And I was thinking to myself ‘two plus two equals four right’? Not two plus two equals well, how do you feel about that, is that an injustice? No, we gotta teach the kids to get the right answer.”
Earlier this year, the Florida Department of Education rejected 54 mathematics textbooks submitted for inclusion in the state’s curriculum for the 2022-2023 school year over alleged indoctrination of students.
The Florida Department of Education said the books did not “properly aligned to Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.)” and “included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics.”
A majority of the books rejected (71 percent) were for grades K-5.
